Abstract
Materials such as concentrates of massive or sedimentary ilmenite or leucoxene are subjected to leaching with aq. HCl under reducing conditions to remove Fe and other impurities such as Mg, Mn and Ca, and to obtain a solid material enriched in Ti (to 70-80, pref >90%, TiO2), which is suitable for the mfr. of TiO2 pigments or for the halogenation process. The presence of a reducing agent (pref. metallic Fe) increases the leaching rate.
