Abstract

The sealed inclined tubes in which a vaporising heat transfer medium exchanges heat between a hot fluid, in contact with lower ends, and a cooling fluid in contact with upper ends, have a packing immersed in the liq medium, to enhance nucleation, and ensure even boiling. The packing comprises porous elements, e.g. as spheres or coils or a concentric inner tube open at top and bottom, and extending to surface level of medium, provides a channel for liq. to flow to lower end and an annular channel in which boiling occurs. The heat exchanger is suitable for air cooling of combustion exhaust fumes.
