Abstract
Object is formed from a crystallisable glass with compsn. in wt%, SiO2 67-75, Al2O3 16.5-22.5, Li2O 3.8-6.2, ZrO2 + TiO2 2.3-3.8, Na2O 0.38-0.62, K2O 0.1-0.25, where mol ratio of Al2O3/R2O is 1-1.35, R2O being an alkali metal oxide. It is then heat treated at 718-774 degrees C for 4-6 hrs. 857-886 degrees C, for 3/4 to 1 1/4 hrs. 954-1204 degrees C for the same time, and then immersed in a NaNO3 salt bath at 399 degrees C for 4 hrs. to set up a surface compressive stress layer.
