Abstract

Sandwich glass comprising two sheets of glass with an intervening sheet of adhesive plastic film (polyvinyl) butyral) where >=1 of the glass sheets is thin, (0.5-2mm) and has a pattern of fine scratches outlining small polygonal plates 30 mm across on the face to be in contact with the plastic film. Pref. the scratches form a square or hexagonal mesh pattern on both layers of a flat screen or on the inner layer of a curved screen. Pref. the scratches are made by a pointed metal oxide tool, pref. one which will deposit fine particles of alumina in the scratches. Esp. for mfr. of vehicle windscreens or side windows to produce a structure which will promptly locally shatter if struck by a person's head.
