Abstract
1,143,468. Laminated windshields. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 28 April, 1966 [28 April, 1965], No. 18753/66. Heading B5N. A vehicle window comprises two spaced glass sheets 20, 24, and a transparent plastics layer 22 adherently bonded to the inner face of at least one of the glass sheets, the window being adapted to be mounted in a vehicle in such a position that the sheet 24 is an inner sheet and the sheet 20 is an outer sheet with respect to the interior of the vehicle, the window being characterized in that the sheet 24 has strengthening compressive stresses developed in a surface layer thereof and is no greater in thickness than the sheet 20, whereby the inner sheet 24 has a greater flexibility and resistance to fracture than the outer sheet has when impacted by a blunt object. In one method of making a windshield the outer sheet 20 is cut from a 0À085 inch thick ribbon of Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass and after grinding and polishing is strengthened by immersion in a molten salt bath of NaNO 3 at 450‹ C. for up to two hours. The inner sheet 24 is of similar glass 0À065 inch thick and is strengthened by a four hour treatment in a NaNO 3 bath at 450‹ C. followed by a five minute treatment in KNO 3 at 450‹ C. Alternatively Na 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass is used for the sheets in which case the strengthening treatment varies slightly. The strengthened glass sheets are then laminated to an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral in an oil autoclave. The strengthening of the glass sheets is such that on impact the inner sheet breaks up into granular particles unlikely to injure a passenger in the vehicle, and the outer sheet fractures into large pieces which do not impair vision through the windshield. In a second embodiment the glass sheets are of the same thickness, and in a third embodiment the plastics sheet is bonded to the inner face of one of the glass sheets only, the space between the plastics layer and the other glass sheet being filled by a liquid, held in place by an edge seal, and having a refractive index chosen to reduce reflections from the faces of the glass sheets.
