Abstract

1283695 Laminated windscreens PILKING- TON BROS Ltd R MELLING A J NOBBS and A LEFF 29 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968] 51746/68 Heading B5N [Also in Division C1] A laminated windscreen comprises two sheets of glass of thickness 0À5-3 mm. laminated with a transparent plastics interlayer, e.g. of polyvinylbutyral, the inner sheet being toughened to provide a central tensile stress of 420-1120 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, and the outer sheet being annealed or toughened to produce a central tensile stress of 420-560 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. Examples of preferred thicknesses and central tensile stresses for the toughened sheet(s) are given. The toughened sheet(s) may have a modulus of rupture of 1600- 2100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the ratio of surface compressive stress to central tensile stress may be 2 : 1. Toughening is carried out by heating the glass to near its softening point, e.g. 600- 750‹ C., chilling the surfaces by 60-80‹ C. by means of a gaseous medium, and contacting with a liquid chilling medium at 45-100‹ C., e.g. an oil or tin or tin alloy bath. Specification 1,253,681 is referred to. [GB1283695A]
