Abstract

Friction component for operation in oil esp. as single plate or multiple disc brakes and synchronising rings is fabricated by powder metallurgy and chiefly composed 60-90 pts. Fe 2-10 pts. Ni 1-5pts. Cu, 3-10 pts. Pb and 3-12 pts. graphite in the form of powder. These components resist high temps i.e. >120 degrees C much more than steel parts covered with asbestos and are much cheaper than sintered bronze. The surface of the components may be grooved to permit wetting of the surface with oil and thus improve the oil flow. Owing to the pore size (10-40 vol.%) a large quantity of oil is absorbed which is released when the frictional heat increases. In an example a mixt. contg. 80 pts. Fe, 1 pt Cu, 3 pts Ni, 6 pts. Pb, 2 pts. magnesia and 8 pts. graphite in powder form was pressed into the shape of ring and sintered at 1050 degrees C, in an inert atmos. The ring functional well in an oil environment.
