Abstract

1282235 Disc brakes; brake pads; cooling disc brakes; preventing noise BENDIX CORP 7 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 57961/70 Heading F2E A spot-type disc brake with a single hydraulic actuator 30, 36 and a floating caliper 28 has one pad 32 made of semi-metallic friction material and the other pad 34 made of organic friction material. Semi-metallic friction material consists of from about 40 to 80% by weight of metal which may be a combination of metal powder, metal oxide powder and/or metal fibers and of from 5% to about 20% by weight of an organic resin binder with the remainder being selected additives such as ceramic powder: organic friction material consists of asbestos fibers within a cured phenolic resin binder plus additives. As shown, the semimetallic pad 32 is situated on the other side of the disc 22 from the actuator 30, 36 and this other side is directed towards the exterior of a vehicle on which the brake is mounted and the arm of the caliper 28 acts as a heat link with suitable provision to prevent the brake fluid boiling the positions of the pads 32, 34 can be interchanged. The arrangement is said to reduce noise in operation.
