Abstract

Alkaline-earth sulphides are obtd. from the corresp. sulphate ore by grinding the ore to not >200 mu m; adding 12-18WT.% based on ore, of a solid carbon-rich reducing agent, and 0.5-1.5wt.% of a mineral clay binder, these two additives having been ground to 0.5 mm; homogenising and compacting the mixt.; in a non-oxidizing atmos. roasting for >=15 mins. at not >1100 degrees C (1050 degrees C), and cooling; percolating with water at 70-90 degrees C; and withdrawing a clear soln. of the alkaline earth sulphide. Or grinding to not >200 mu m may be performed on the mixt. of ore, reducing agent, and clay. Advantages are reduced roasting temp., increased yield on percolating; great purity; reduction in number of operations; ore can be low-grade. Uses are phosphorescence; pigments; glass; rubber; paper.
