Abstract

A sound insulating material consists of a mixt. of powdered rubber with a binder which is flexible and elastic and may consist of a natural or synthetic elastomer or pref. a polyurethane. The compsn. provides a better insulation than rubber for sound insulation of railway tunnels. The powdered rubber may have a particle size 0.2-6, pref. 2-4mm. The polyurethane is pref. a reaction prod. of an aromatic polyisocyanate with a long chain polyester. A plasticiser such as a phthalate, an adipate, chlorinated paraffin, tricresyl phosphate or tar may be added together with catalysts and fillers. 25 pts. of polyurethane may be added to 100 pts. rubber powder. The pot life of the binder should be >=2 hrs., its Shore Hardness 40-75 and its elongation at break 50-200%.
