Abstract

The particles are coated with 0.005 - 0.1 wt.% of a melamine-formaldehyde condensate. This coating, unlike prior art coatings of silicon oil or thermoplastic synthetics contg. hydrophilic gps.,., does not hinder the final foaming operation inside a mould so that the particles are evenly welded together. The particles of polystyrene or copolymers of styrene with e.g. alpha-methyl-styrene, acrylonitrile, N-vinyl cpds. contg. >=95 wt.% styrene are of 0.4 - 3 mm. dia. and contain a hydrocarbon propellant.
