Cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is an aromatic or heterocyclic gp.; Y is -CHR2-CHR2- or - CHR2-CHR2-CHR2-, where each R2 (same or different) is H or an aliphatic gp.), are prepd. by cyclising a cpd. of formula (II)- The process can be in 2 stages, the first step being the formation of (II) by reaction of R1CH(X)2 (where each X is halogen or one is H and the other is halogen) with S and H2N-Y-OH. Cpds. (I) where R1 is a heterocyclic gp. are novel. (I) are inters. for plant protection agents, pharmaceuticals and dyes.
