Abstract
p-Xylene is prepd. by passing a supply of C8 aromatic cpds. and H2 into an isomerisation zone held under normal isomerisation conditions and contg. an appropriate hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalyst to form a mixture approximately equilibrium of xylene and naphthenes. The naphthenes are separated from the xylenes by fractional distillation, and the p-xylene separated from the other xylene by fractional crystallisation. The process can be carried out in a continuous manner.
