Abstract

Pulsed laser comprising an active material in an optical cavity bounded e.g. by a totally reflecting prism and a semi-reflecting plate in which the inversion coefficient can be sharply increased e.g. by parallel alignment of the hypotenuse of the prism and the surface of the plate. The electromagnetic radiation generated is extracted via a polariser and an optical cell contg. a material (1) in which birefringence is induced. The laser described in the parent patent employed nitrobenzene for (1) and gave pulses of 10 nsec. and 5 nsec. Pulses down to 3 nsec. are obtd. by substitution of neodymium doped (5-7%) glass for the nitrobenzene.
