Abstract

The lactones are of formula (I) (where R is H, alkyl, OH-alkyl, aralkyl, or opt. substd. aryl; R1 is alkyl, alkoxy, OH, or opt. substd. phenyl, R2 is H, halogen, cyano, NH2, OH, carboxy, carbalkoxy, aryl, phenoxy, or opt. substd. alkyl; or R1 and R2 together form a heterocyclic ring structure. X is H, halogen or alkyl, Y is H or halogen, Z is H, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, OH, alkoxy, carbalkoxy, CF3, NO2, carbonamido, sulphonamido, or opt. substd. amino, or Y and Z together form the gp. of formula (II) n is 0-2; and m is 0-4.) The lactones (I) are not coloured, but react with weakly acidic materials with scission of the lactone ring to give the highly coloured quinonoid form. The colours have a good light fastness.
