Abstract

Pyrocatechol is prepared by treating o-chlorophenol with 4-8 mole equivalents of alkali-metal hydroxide in aqueous solution at 60-85% Concentration by weight, in the presence of a copper hydrolysis catalyst (0.5% by weight of Cu relative to the weight of o-chlorophenol) at 160-240 degrees C. Preferably the alkali concentration is maintained at the above level throughout the reaction. This method minimizes the production of resorcinol and polynuclear products, and gives good yields in reasonable reaction times.
