Abstract

An enclosed cell contng. a lithium cathode and a non-aqs. electrolyte composed of a methyl chloroformate soln. of lithium tetra-chloroaluminate. The electrolyte does not contain traces of free AlCl3. The anode comprises a metal chloride such as silver chloride or cupric chloride which is insoluble in the methyl chloroformate and is a Lewis base. Specif. the cell comprises a casing and a casing cover. An anode is made of a mixture of 95% AgCl and 5% graphite and is directly compressed in the casing, and maintained by a steel ring. A cathode is a lithium plate. A grid of nickel plated steel is welded to the cover and is buried into the lithium plate. A separator is made of cellulose fibre of one or more layers which is impregnated with an electrolyte of methyl chloroformate soln. of lithium tetra-chloroaluminate. The gap between the casing and the cover is enclosed by an insulating gasket. Suitably the electrolyte is composed of ClCOOH3, 1M LiAlCl4 and 0. 1M LiClO4.
