Abstract

Method of agglomeration of diamond and cermet materials to form drilling and polishing tools comprises sintering in a reaction chamber at high pressure, under conditions in which the diamond and cermet powders are first encased in a sealed graphite envelope itself coated with a material of low melting point which softens at a temp. below the sintering temp. forming a hydrostatic medium ensuring even distribution of pressure throughout the diamond-cermet mass. Diamond - diamond, cermet - cermet and diamond-cermet bonds are stronger than in prior art and bodies made are less liable to thermal stress and shock.
