Abstract
BK 217 and its forms BK 217 alpha, BK 217 beta and BK 217 gamma and their mutants, are prepd. by cultivating a BK 217-producing strain of Streptoverticillatus cinnamoneus (pref. S. cinnamoneus NRRL 3594) under aerobic conditions in an aqs. nutrient medium until marked anti-bacterial activity is conferred on the culture by formation of BK 217, then optionally carrying out further treatment to isolate BK 217. The new antibiotics have broad-spectrum antifungal activity and for therapeutic purposes can be administered orally, topically, or by injection. They can also be incorporated into sanitary products such as soaps, shampoos, disinfectant compositions and solns for washing the body, installations and locations.
