Abstract

In the prodn. of hollow metal blocks by the electro-slag remelting process with consumeable electrodes in water cooled crucibles with ring shaped bottoms, are employed upward tapering cores permitting unhindered shrinkage of the ingot on solidification and cooling as the crucible fills up, thus precluding the jamming of the core by the ingot. Pref. the core is moved downwards relative to the crucible during the melting operation, its length exceeding that of the final length of the ingot being produced.
