Cement setting retardants comprise fluidisers, such as calcium ligno-sulphonate, calcium gluconate, saccharose, polyphosphates and hexametaphosphates and air entrainers such as polyvinylalcohol and polyfurfurylalcohol. They are used in warm weather, for cement to be transported long distances after mixing and to improve injection properties. Pref. compsns. are (I) (for cements with 10% C3A) calcium lignosulphonate 16.4, hexametaphosphate 12, orthophosphoric acid 0.5, (II) (cements with >10% C3A) sodium lignosulphate 10, polyphosphate 12, orthophosphoric acid 2, sodium gluconate 8, furfuryl alcohol 0.5, (III) (to retard setting and reduce shrinkage) calcium linosulphonate 15, hexametaphosphate 9, saccharose 5, polyvinyl alcohol 6.
