Abstract

An external combustion engine or heat pump in which a two-part piston sweeps alternately a primary cylinder space and secondary cylinder space, the working volumes in the two spaces varying inversely; working gas such as helium hydrogen or air is passed through a heat exchanger to the primary cylinder space, transferred to the secondary space and then exhausted to atmosphere or returned to a reservoir of working gas for recycling. Single or multi-cylinder engines operate on a cycle which is almost perfectly reversible and so more efficient than those using the conventional stirling cycle. Very efficient, high power/weight ratio prime movers and refrigerating plants.
