Abstract
Non aq. electrolyte for electrochemical cells with lithium cathodes comprising a soln. of LiAlCl4 and KAlCl4 in ClCOOCH3. The total concn. is about 2 moles/l and LiAlCl4:KAlCl4 ratio is 1, pref. 1/7. The separator is sintered alumina (pore size 0.3 - 1.4). The pref. positive electrode active material is CuCl. The electrolyte is prepd. by reacting LiClO4 with a soln. of KAlCl4 in ClCOOCH3, and separately pptd. KClO4 by decantation. The KAlCl4 is prepd. by reacting a slight excess of KCl with AlCl3 at 300 degrees C. The electrolyte reduces polarisation and dendrite formation compared with LiAlCl4/ClCOOCH3.
