Abstract
Non aqueous electrolyte for Li anode cells comprising LiAlCl4 and NR4Cl where R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu pref. Et. dissolved in SOCl2. The concn. of LiAlCl4 plus up to 5 mol % NR4Cl is 1-2 mole/litre. The cathode is pref. sintered nickel and the separator polypropylene felt. The addition of NR4Cl neutralises any excess AlCl3 which otherwise attacks the Li anode. The electrolyte is prepared by adding AlCl3 then LiCl to SOCl2. Addition of NR4Cl may precipitate some LiCl which is filtered off.
