Abstract

Fibre sheets are formed from a slurry of 50 wt. % positively charged fibres-asbestos-and the rest negatively or uncharged in water with a thermoplastic latex e.g. ABS rubber, poly(meth)acrylic acid ester p.v.c. or rubbery modified polystyrene with a total solids content of 10-40%. The slurry is stirred to coagulate the latex and diluted to 1-2 wt. % solids. Sheets are formed on a paper machine in the usual fashion. The sheets are stamped out into forms with complicated contours in a metal press heated to 38-150 degrees C and 70 kg/cm2. This method prevents formation of a plastic film and shows good polymer retention.
