Abstract

Each electrode, which is either of a single sheet of conductive material suitably formed by pressing etc or of two sheets in surface contact, has a central working area with a 3-D pattern, an edge area with holes matched to those in the membranes to allow overall electrolyte flow and channels to the working area and two separate areas coated with sealing material. The outer seal around the edge, in conjunction with the membrane, forms a closed electrolyte chamber. The other is around selected holes so that the holes may be used either for feed or discharge according to the way in which they are sealed off from the electrolyte chambers.
