Abstract

3-Phenyl-3-alkoxy-1,2-propylene oxides C6H5-CH(OR)-CH-CH2-O (I) (where R is 1-3C alkyl), useful as synthesis intermediates and as starting materials for lacquers and resins, are prepd. by (i) reacting cinnamic alcohol and t-butylhypobromite in presence of excess alkanol to form 3-phenyl-3-alkoxy -2-bromopropanol (II) which in step (ii) is reacted with a base, such as NaOH. Pref. step (i) takes place with stirring at -10 degrees C and excess alkanol (methanol) is expelled under reduced pressure, pref. (II) is opt. purified before step (ii) takes place with stirring below 20 degrees C. (I) are obtained in high (98-99%) purity.
