Abstract
Ammonia or ammonium salt of an acid having an acidity equal to a less than that of the alkyl aryl sulphonic acid (m.w. 300 to 650) to be treated is added to the alkylaryl sulphonic acid in a proportion such that the number of equivalents of NH3 are equal to the number of moles of H2SO4 and 0-30% of the number of moles of alkylaryl sulphonic acid and the NH4HSO4 formed is removed. The neutralisation may be effected at 0-80 degrees C in the presence of 1-75% hydrocarbon a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent.
