Abstract

The machine classifies and sorts, vegetables, e.g. whole French beans. It consists of a frame on which a rotatable drum is mounted; the drum has a feed hopper at one end and a discharge tube at the other. The drum, which is substantially horizontal, consists of a pair of end mountings which support a number of spaced arms arranged in a circular manner to define a cylindrical enclosure provided with longitudinal sorting and classifying slots. Regulating components are fixed on one of the mountings for simultaneously adjusting the width of the slots. Cams are mounted on the frame for temporarily liberating their setting so that when the slots are in th upper zone they attain their maximum width and release any jammed beans; the slots automatically return to their set width as the drum turns to the lower level. The jamming problem is thus completely overcome and the slots can be adjusted to suit variations in the beans from crop to crop.
