Abstract

The new wad is intended for the manufacture of cartridges contng. lead shot; when installed the wad can be used either for maintaining the concentration of the shot or for causing their dispersion. The wad is made of plastic material, in one piece, by injection moulding. It comprises a forward skirt and a rear skirt connected by an intermediate disc. The forward skirt is separated by a number of longitudinal slits to form a series of small tongues. On leaving the muzzle of the gun these tongues open out under the effect of the air resistance while the rear skirt bends back over the disc; the shots remain well grouped while the gases from the explosion are deflected by the screan presented by the wad. For short ranges, however, the shot must be scattered as soon after leaving the gun as possible; in this case the wad is mounted in the cartridge case with the front skirt turned towards the rear. On firing the gases caused the immediate opening out of the tongues so that the shot are blown all around the expanded wad; in this way they form a large sheaf as they leave the gun.
