Abstract

Ions are separated from an ionised liquid, such as sea-water, by a device which includes a vessel for containing the liquid; this may be made from at least one upstream conduit and a downstream conduit. A magnetic field is generated in a certain zone of the vessel by an electro-magnet which has its pole pieces arranged on each side of the plane of the free surface of the liquid in the vessel. The magnetic field is orientated between the pole pieces in a direction perpendicular to this plane. In addition an electric field is generated by the immersion of electrodes in the vessel, below the level of the plane. The ionised liquid is sent along the conduits and the combined actions of the magnetic and electric fields drive the charged ions towards at least one of the walls of the vessel. The liquid near the walls of the vessel, which is charged with the directed ions, can then be withdrawn and these ions are thus eliminated from the remainder of the liquid. In the desalination of sea-water the yield is far superior to that of other known devices.
