Abstract

A mould is first made by casting a low loss insulating resin directly on a model of the article to be reproduced, coating the assembly with a liquid, paste or powdered unpolymerised plastic of high dielectric strength, covering it with a sheet of fabric or skin, and then gelling the plastic material by passing the composite article through an H.F. electric field. With a continuous mould system, the moulds are pressed between two rolls turning at the same speed as the conveyor, each roll being joined to one terminal of the H.F. circuit. Separate moulds are intermittently moved forward to a pressing station in which the hydraulic press platens are connected to H.F. terminals. The resin for the mould is pref. an epoxide and the coating material a PVC plastisol. H.F. heating ensures speed and limits temperature rise to the plastic material having little effect on the loss materials.
