Abstract
Black liquor from a conventional cellulose pulping and bleaching process is treated in a boiler to remove organics and produce a molten alt/ash. The melt is then contacted at high temp. with a reducing gas in which the vapour pressure of NaCl is less. The nonvolatilised, dechlorinated salt is sepd. from the gas, dissolved and caustified prior to recycling in the system. The chlorinated gas is heat-exchanged and recovered. The regeneration system permits efficient use of water and yields an 80% Cl2 recovery from the black liquor.
