Abstract

The addition of water, which is absorbed by hygroscopic material within the cell, dissolves solids within the cell which in solution form the electrolyte. The hygroscopic material itself forms, at least in part, the soluble electrolyte component. It may be mixed with the cathode material which forms a paste when the cell is activated. The hygroscopic material will absorb virtually all the water required for full activation of the cell. The hygroscopic material is specif. lithium chloride, zinc chloride, magnesium hydroxide or magnesium chloride. Specif. a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode and an electrolyte based on lithium chloride and ammonium chloride are used. A porous separator may be interposed between the anode and the cathode and electrolyte material mixture.
