Abstract

The source includes a refractory capillary tube, containing several refractory metal wires arranged in a ring, open at one end and connected to a reservoir of lithium at the other end. The wire metal has a work function of the same order as (pref. greater than) the ionisation potential of lithium. Pref. material are: iridium or platinum for the wires, or rhenium if the tube is tantalum. The tube and reservoir are both heated, pref. by electronic bombardment of the tube.
