Abstract

The electrolyte which can be gelled in the cold comprises an aqs. saline soln. of ammonium chloride, and alkaline earth, magnesium or lithium chloride, but is free of zinc chloride. A gelling agent is added, pref. cross linked starch with a reduced and stabilised degree of swelling in aqs. soln. Spec. the chlorides are ammonium and calcium. The Zn/Mn dioxide cell shows improved polarisation characteristics and extended discharge life down to ca.
