Abstract

Cpds. of the formula: (I) wherein R1 is H or C1-3 alkyl and R2 is C2-6 alkyl. (I) are highly effective against viruses. Mercury-5-propyl-uracil (3.53 g) and di-p-chlorobenzoyl-deoxyribofuranosyl chloride (8.6 g) gradually heated while stirring in anhyd. toluene (150 ml) to reflux, toluene distilled off, residue taken up in chloroform (1000 ml), shaken with 30% KI soln. pet. ether (50-70) added to organic phase, crystallized product filtered off, boiled for 2 hrs. under reflux with 2% sodium methylate in abs. methanol, solvent removed, residue treated with DOWEX 50, H+ form, in aq. soln. extracted with ether, aq. soln. concentrated by evapn. and dried under vacuum to give 5-propyl-desoxy uridin.
