Abstract

A catalyst is used having on its surface a mixture of NiO and/or Ni and one or more oxides of U, the weight ratio of U:Ni in the carrier being 0.62:1 to 0.74:1 and total weight of Ni and U (Ni as NiO) in the carrier being is not >20% wt. of a catalyst. Pref. carrier is alpha-alumina and pref. catalyst also contains K2O or Li2O or compounds which decompose on heating to K2O or Li2O as well as BaO, Ba(OH)2, BaCO3 or barium uranate or a compound decomposing to these compounds on heating.
