Abstract

Sulphur-containing compounds and their salts are oxidised by contacting the compds. with a gas contg. molecular oxygen, and with a solid catalytic mass prepared by mixing a solid transition metal phthalocyanine with a support, and an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide, the amount of phthalocyanine being 0.05-50% by wt., relative to the support, and the amount of alkali metal oxide or hydroxide being 10-50% by wt. relative to the total catalyst mass. The phthalocyanine pref. contains Co, V, Cu, Fe or Ni as metal, and the support is pref. carbon. The sulphur-contg. compds. are pref. present in hydrocarbon cuts. The process enables mercaptans, or their salts, and disulphides in the hydrocarbons to be directly oxidised, thus sweetening the hydrocarbons.
