Abstract
In catalysts for the oxidn. of mercaptans into disulphides (esp. for sweetening petroleum distillates), the oxidn-active component is fixed directly on a support. The support pref. contains Lewis-type basic sites (esp. N atoms) and is pref. a crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine), esp. a polymer contg. 30-70 wt.% poly(4-vinylpyridine), 10-60 wt. % divinylbenzene and 0-40 wt.% styrene. The oxidn. component is pref. Co but can also be Ni, Cu or V. Petroleum distillates can be sweetened by (a) contacting with the catalyst in air in the presence of aqs. NaOH or (b) first extracting the distillate with the NaOH soln. and contacting this with the catalyst.
