Abstract

At least one substance (1) of formula: (where R1 and R2 are opt. the same and represent H, opt. branched C1-C6 alkyl (pref. C1-4), C2-C6 alkenyl, but the total of Cs in R1 and R2 does not exceed 6), is used at pref. 0.0001-0.1 wt.% in mixed perfume base, 0.01-0.00001% in food preparations (may be added as 10.0-0.1% concentrate in edible carrier), or 0.1-20 ppm. in gas. Specifically pref. are 5-ethyl-2,5 dihydro-3-hydroxy-4-methyl furan-2-one (A) or 4,5 dimethyl- partic. pref. is (A) with its strong caramel/curry odour. With their unusual spice-like odour these compounds are very suitable to add a new 'tone' to perfume bases.
