Abstract

The solid state polymerisation of polyester prepolymer particles is carried out by heating the particles in fluidised bed conditions using heat exchangers whose surfaces are coated with a thin layer of polytetrafluoroethylene. The temperature is sufficiently high for polymerisation to take place but is below the melting point of the particles. The polytetrafluoroethylene coating improves the fluidisation conditions and in particular the transfer of heat. Uniform conditions are established. Specifically the polymer is polyethylene terephthalate and the temperature is between 200 and 300 degrees C and is 5 to 80 degrees C below the melting point of the particles. The polymer produced has a molecular weight of at least 15,000 and possibly of about 100,000 or higher; the intrinsic viscosity is higher than 0.50.
