Abstract

Substd. glutonic acids I are prepared in good yield by oxidising and saponifying the cyanaldehydes II by means of chlorine and/or bromine in the presence of at least the stoichiometric amount of water, and optionally of a solvent. (R' and R2 are each C1-4 alkyl; or R' and R2 together form a carbocyclic group). Reaction proceeds rapidly and smoothly.
