Abstract
PVC fibres are produced by (a) preparing a suspension contg. at least 15% wt. PVC, having a molwt. of 60,000-120,000, and prepared by polymerisation at -25 degrees and -40 degrees C, optionally together with other suitable polymers the solvent being dimethylacetamide or dimethylformamide (b) cooling to a temp. below -5 degrees C (c) adding 0.5-3% wat er (on solvent), 0.1-2% wt. ZnO (on polymer), and 0.1-2% wt. organotin cpd. I (on polymer) (d) dissolving the suspension at 120-150 degrees C, (e) extruding the spinning soln. through a spinneret into a coagulating bath composed of water and dimethylacetamide or dimethylformamide in a ratio of 35/65 to 15/85, maintained at 20-40 degrees C, (f) drawing the filaments at least 5 x their original length, at a temp. below 100 degrees C, (g) drying the filaments without drawing at 120-170 degrees C, and (h) relaxing the dry filaments. (R1 and R2 are each alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and X and Y are each -S-R3 or -S-CH2-COOR3; and R3 is alkyl or aryl).
