Abstract

The rate of production of ammonia from its elements at lower pressures than normal (i.e. below 150 bars) can be effected without an increase in gas flow rate if the gas is continually scrubbed out in a non-volatile solvent. Various glycols and glycerols are very suitable. The solvent system need not be water free provided that the water vapour content of the reaction gas is kept to a minimum, and a hygroscopic solvent is of advantage since it can serve to remove water vapour from the gas stream which would otherwise tend to impair catalyst performance. The solvent can be readily regenerated by heating or by rectification with a gas stream, the evolved ammonia then being trapped by a convenient process suitable for its final intended use.
