Abstract

(A) Substd. p-hydroxyphenylhydrazones of general formula (I): R1 and R2 = H or halogen R3 = H, alkyl (C1-6)opt. substd. by carboxy or alkoxycarbonyl; or benzyl opt. substd. by hydroxy or methoxy (B) Salts of (I) with physiologically acceptable, non-toxic bases. (I) have strong antibacterial activity esp. against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Bacterium proteus. They may be used as antibacterial additives in pharmaceutical prepns., cosmetics or industrial products or as local external disinfectants and antiseptics and for disinfecting wounds. They are also very suitable for disinfecting the mouth and throat. After administration they are excreted unaltered in the urine and render this bacteriostatic. They are esp. suitable for veterinary medicine.
