Abstract

Refractory articles are produced by (a) mixing a refractory material (I) powder (preferably is not 0.04 mm.) and a plastic binder composition (II) which can be hardened, (b) shaping a preform, (c) hardening and imposing the final shape and (d) calcining. The composition may also contain whiskers or fibres as reinforcement. The products are especially sheets or corrugated sheets but complex shapes are possible; the binder gives coherence and flexibility to the preform but softens on heating to allow shaping or re-shaping. In previous techniques the preform was insufficiently robust and/or the final form too hard for machining.
