Abstract
Fire extinguishing compsn. partic. suitable for the rapid extinguishing of intense fire on board ships, planes, armoured engines, hydrocarbon probes, special prod. plants, etc. comprises (1) trifluorochloroethylene (TFCE) and/or an oligomer pref. a dimer or trimer of TFCE obtd. by cracking high polymers or by telomerisation and having b. pts. >100-120 degrees C and f.pts. -60 degrees C and/or (2) trifluorochlorobromoethanes having b.pts. >90-100 degrees C and f.pts. -60 degrees C. The compsn. pref. also contains other halogenated hydrocarbons e.g. CFBr3, CF2Br2, C2F2Cl2Br2 as f.pt. depressants. The extinguishing power of the compsn. is >=2 x that of the most active fire extinguishers known. The high b.pts. of the ingredients ensure that the latter do not vaporise easily on contact with flames and the low f.pts that they do not freeze in the extinguishing appts. at low temps.
