Abstract
Fuel cell electrode prepd. by coating sintered Ni with a mixt. of a metal and a fluorinated polymer from a liq. suspension, followed by application of a porous polymer film under pressure. The assembly is then heated at 100-400 degrees C in H2 or H2/N2 to drive off the remaining liq., bond the layers together and reduce and activate the catalyst. Pref. catalysts are Pt or Pd black, Raney Ni or Ag or their mixts., and the polymers are pTFE, PTFE-propylene, or polytrifluoromonochloroethylene. The suspension is applied by spraying onto a hot (20-300 degrees C) sintered plate 0.05-0.5 mm thick, the porous polymer foil is applied at room temp. and 50-200 bars (pref. 100).
