Abstract

Prepn. of substd. imidazoles of R1, R2 and R3 are Hydrogen, aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic and R4 = aliphatic or R1 and R2 together can be part of an aromatic ring. The cpds. are intermediates for the manufacture of insecticides. A soln. of 68 g. imidazole in 96 cc methanol was passed from above into a vertical tube over a period of 68 h., filled with aluminum oxide at 350 deg.C. The reaction mixture was distilled as it left the catalyst chamber and after removal of the excess of methanol gave 59 g. 1-methylimidazole, b.p. 193 deg.C/760 mm Hg.
